OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) is reminding people to use caution before hiring a party bus for those attending proms, graduations and other events this spring.
The UTC said it penalized 11 illegal party bus companies $90,000 within the past year for operating without the proper permits.
Party bus companies in Washington must have a valid permit from the UTC and are required to pass regular safety inspections, meet minimum insurance standards, and perform drug and alcohol testing on drivers.
“Make the end of the school year safe and memorable for all the right reasons - check for permits and safety ratings before you hire a party bus for prom-goers and graduating seniors,” the UTC said in a news release.
If alcohol is to be served on a party bus, state law requires a liquor permit from the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board and requires someone other than the driver to be present to prevent consumption by minors.
Consumers can confirm the permit status of a party bus company here, by calling 1-888-333-9882 or by emailing consumer@utc.wa.gov. Consumers can acquire a carrier profile with a safety rating from the UTC here.
