STEVENS PASS, Wash. — Stevens Pass reopened Wednesday after an overnight closure caused by heavy snowfall and avalanche control work.
WSDOT crews said they planned to reopen the highway at noon, but it reopened early at 9:30 a.m.
Westbound US 2 traffic was stopped at Leavenworth and eastbound traffic was stopped six miles east of Skykomish.
The pass was closed Tuesday afternoon and remained closed overnight after heavy snow caused cars to spin out and increased avalanche danger.
As of Wednesday morning, chains were required.
US 2 Stevens Pass has reopened with chains required. That means if you are AWD/4WD you still need to carry chains in case you need them. Never used your chains? Practice before you head up the pass. Drive for conditions and give plenty of room to the car in front of you. pic.twitter.com/DfVWPwpUTb
