Stolen gun recovered, two arrested - including 14-year-old - near Rainier Beach basketball game

Seattle police arrest convicted felon for violent carjacking

A 14-year-old was arrested for firearm possession and an adult was apprehended for a Department of Corrections violation during increased police patrols around a high school basketball game, according to the Seattle Police Department.

On Friday at 7:30 p.m., the Gang Violence Reduction Unit (GVRU) and Community Response Group (CRG) monitored the area near Rainier Beach High School, given intelligence that suggested a potential for violence during the boys’ basketball game between Garfield and Rainier Beach.

Officers and detectives patrolled the surrounding area before, during, and after the game, leading to the arrest of a 14-year-old male, who police say discarded a stolen firearm inside a vehicle and then attempted to run away.

An adult accomplice was also detained for a Department of Corrections violation.

The juvenile was booked into the Youth Services Center on firearm charges.

The adult male was booked into the SCORE jail on Department of Corrections violations.

In addition, police assisted with an investigation into an attempt to bring a gun inside the venue.

“Thanks to proactive enforcement, no major incidents of violence were reported in or around the school before, during, or after the game,” the department stated.
