ASTORIA, Ore. — ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) - Fisherman looking to land a white sturgeon on the lower Columbia River will get several days to make the attempt starting in May.
The Daily Astorian reports Oregon and Washington state fishery managers say the river will be open for retention fishing of white sturgeon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from May 13 to June 5.
Fishery managers are cautious with the retention season because the number of legal-sized and adult-sized white sturgeon drastically declined from 2008 to 2012. That prompted both states to close retention fisheries below Bonneville Dam starting in 2014 to allow the stocks to rebuild. The fishery reopened in 2017.
Anglers have a daily bag limit of one legal-sized white sturgeon measuring between 44 and 50 inches and an annual limit of two fish. The total allowable catch for all anglers is 2,960 sturgeon.
