SNOQUALMIE PASS, Wash. — An Atmospheric River is moving through western Washington on Tuesday, bringing snow and ice to the Cascades.
The Summit at Snoqualmie is also opening for the season today due to the fresh snow from this system.
However, the roads leading to the Summit parking lots are slick in some places.
Many skiers and snowboarders were already in the parking lots by 5 a.m. Tuesday, with the main lot almost full by 7 a.m.
Several of those people tell us they would never miss an opening day.
“It’s tradition to get first chair or at least try to it’s something you have to do,” said Cedar Merry.
Many drivers said the roads were fine around 5 a.m., but as they got closer to the Summit, there was a lot of slush.
Madison Beach said she camped in her truck to make sure she got a good spot on the lift.
“We also heard there were swag bags we wanted to do that,” Beach said.
A few Snoqualmie kids were also running around at the resort early, they say they have been skiing since they were toddlers, so this is a big day.
“Yeah we are skipping school, we got our homework done, we are going to go skiing and skip school,” Merry said.
This weather system is expected to bring rain to the mountains over the next 24 hours while keeping temperatures low, bringing a possibility of ice in higher elevations
“I feel like going back will be worse if anything especially since it’s getting colder,” Beach said.
WSDOT recommends bringing tire chains, food, an ice scraper, and warm clothes is key to staying alive if you run off the road.
Remember to check their website for current pass conditions as they can change quickly.
