Suspect set off fireworks at Puyallup mall, prompting shooting scare

PUYALLUP, Wash. — Authorities responded to a chaotic scene at the South Hill Mall Saturday night after receiving multiple calls regarding suspicious activity at a Macy’s store.

In a statement, Puyallup police said the reports “ranged from individuals hearing what they thought were gunshots to others reporting that fireworks were being lit off inside of the store.”

Officers arrived at the scene around 8:15 p.m. and saw individuals running from the location and the smoke-filled store. The officers quickly confirmed that an individual had set off a multi-shot, mortar-type firework in the store in an attempt to create a diversion before stealing merchandise.

Central Pierce Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene. No injuries were reported and officers said “there is no reason to believe that there is any concern of danger around the South Hill Mall.”

There was damage to the store’s ceiling tiles, as well as water damage from the sprinklers.

Fireworks-related evidence was recovered from the scene, and officers found no evidence of a firearm being used at the mall.

Police do not have a suspect in custody but are attempting to interview witnesses and review surveillance videos to obtain more information.
