JEFFERSON COUNTY, Wash. — Two suspects are in custody after a burglary attempt ended with a failed escape by boat.
Around 8 a.m. on Dec. 10, a homeowner called the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to report an active burglary.
The homeowner told deputies that two people, a man and a woman dressed in black, had broken into a storage container and took over $11,000 worth of gold and jewelry.
According to deputies, the suspects were spotted by the owner leaving in an SUV with its license plates covered.
The owner of the stolen items tried to stop them by throwing firewood at the SUV, shattering the window.
As deputies answered the call, Kitsap County deputies found the SUV rolled over after a crash in Port Gamble. Kitsap County deputies said the SUV was on its roof but the suspects had run off on foot.
Jefferson County used a drone to look for the suspect after learning that the suspect stole a small rowboat to escape.
The rowboat started taking water and began to sink forcing the suspects to swim back to land and right into the hands of deputies.
The suspects were taken for a medical evaluation before they were booked into Jefferson County Jail.
