Suspicious package locks down Naval Base Kitsap

BREMERTON, Wash. — Naval Base Kitsap was in lockdown on Wednesday afternoon after reports of a suspicious package, according to a Facebook post from the Bremerton Naval Base.

Around 2 p.m., a person approached the main gate with a possible explosive device found during an inspection of their car.

Security forces immediately secured the gate and established a cordon around the area.

The driver of the car was taken into custody and questioned by Navy Security Forces.

During the lockdown, all personnel were instructed to avoid the area.

Around 3:45 p.m. the scene was assessed by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Eleven and determined to be non-threatening.

Naval Base Kitsap is the largest naval organization in the Navy Region Northwest.

In 2018, a man claimed to have an improvised explosive device on his body when he passed through the Naval Base Kitsap vehicle inspection gate.
