TACOMA, Wash. — The city of Tacoma is launching its five-year Electric Vehicle Charging Station Pilot Program.
The program will temporarily lift the right-of-way occupancy permit requirement for property owners who want to install curbside electric vehicle charging equipment next to their property.
Charging equipment will only be allowed on residential streets, not on arterial streets.
“Cars and trucks are the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Tacoma. Making it easier for residents to own and use electric vehicles is a top strategy to addressing this major challenge,” councilmember Ryan Mello said in a news release.
City officials said the program is designed to serve as a solution to homes lacking the driveway or garage space needed to charge electric vehicles.
“Since most people who drive an electric vehicle charge it at night, making charging capability easier is very important. The pilot program is essential to providing this option for homeowners who may not otherwise be able to charge their car at home,” Mello said.
As part of the pilot program, the city has also created a tip sheet for property owners to find out specific requirements.
