Tacoma leaders trying to crack down on street racing

TACOMA, Wash. — Tacoma city leaders are trying to crack down on street racing after racers took over the downtown area on Saturday.

Tacoma police say more than 10 cars blocked an intersection just before midnight.

Officers said that when they got there, people laid down in front of their patrol cars.

KIRO7 spoke to people living nearby who said the racing is getting out of hand.

“The people that live here are Section 8. Ninety percent of the people that live in this neighborhood are disabled,” said Tacoma resident Heather.

City leaders will look at changing its street racing ordinance to include spectators. That means anyone watching a street race could be charged with a misdemeanor.

The penalty would be up to 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
