Tacoma Police Department launches public comment portal to assess police standards

TACOMA, Wash. — The Tacoma Police Department launched a new public comment portal to assess if police are keeping up with standards set by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), the Tacoma Police Department announced Thursday in a news release.

“As an accredited Police Department through the CALEA, the department’s policies, procedures, management, operations, and support services are routinely assessed to ensure the highest standards of contemporary law enforcement are being met,” said the release.

Only 2% of police agencies nationwide receive national accreditation from the CALEA.

The purpose of the portal is for the CALEA to get public feedback on the Tacoma Police Department’s compliance with CALEA standards, community engagement, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for the national status.

The comments can be in the form of recommendations or concerns.

The CALEA will use the comments to improve the department.

The portal can be accessed here.

“The Tacoma Police Department’s goal is to make Tacoma the safest city in the country by working together with the community, enforcing the law in a fair and impartial manner, preserving the peace and order in neighborhoods, and safeguarding Constitutional guarantees,” said the news release. “CALEA accreditation is one part of that overall mission, and the department will continue to use it to serve Tacoma and those who live, work and visit here.”
