Tim Eyman, anti-tax activist, pleads not guilty in office chair theft case

LACEY, Wash. — Washington anti-tax activist Tim Eyman entered a plea of not guilty on Thursday morning to a misdemeanor theft charge for allegedly stealing a $70 office chair from a Lacey Office Depot store in February.

The incident happened shortly before noon on Feb. 13 at the Office Depot at 602 Sleater-Kinney Road Southwest.

Video of the incident appears to show Eyman sitting in a chair between entrance doors and, when the initial door to the Office Depot opens, taking the chair out to the parking area.

In Thurston County District Court on Thursday, Eyman’s lawyer, Casey Arbenz, said the incident was a misunderstanding.

“This was a guy who was preoccupied, pulled a chair out, walked backed in (and) fully intended to pay for it,” Arbenz said.

Arbanz went on to say that he believes Eyman and prosecutors could come to an agreement.

“I think there’s a chance this case will resolve. Every case does with someone like Tim, who has no criminal history,” Arbenz said.

Eyman was ordered by Judge Brett Buckley to not have any contact with the Office Depot store, and is next scheduled to appear in court on April 16.
