SPANAWAY, Wash. — An 11-year-old girl was taken to a local hospital after a driver lost control of a truck and drove into her bedroom Friday in Spanaway, striking her bunk bed as she was lying in it.
"I flip over, I almost land on my head and I think I might have hit the ceiling,” said Rachel Hamm in an interview with KIRO 7 after being released from the hospital Friday evening. "I immediately start screaming my life out and mom comes rushing down."
Rachel suffered scrapes, bruises, swelling and soreness but is expected to be OK. Witnesses said the driver was not hurt.
The driver lost control of the truck Friday morning while driving west on 192nd St. East near 6th Ave. East, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, first striking a fence before crashing into Rachel’s bedroom.
Security video from a nearby home captured the driver sliding off the road.
"I opened the door and there’s a car in there!” said Rachel’s mom, Hilary Hamm. "She was sitting on top of the mattress, on top of the car."
Hilary told KIRO 7 the crash shook the entire house.
"She had to climb over the top of the vehicle, through debris to get back to me,” said Hamm.
KIRO 7 asked the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department what went wrong and if deputies planned to cite the driver but did not immediately hear back.
"I'm just trying to think, ‘is this a dream or not?’ It's like a nightmare, almost, like a real-life nightmare,” said Rachel. "I really think if I weren't on the top bunk, I would have most definitely died."
