RENTON, Wash. — A mother and her third-grade daughter were hospitalized after they were struck by a truck Monday morning.

The crash happened at about 8 a.m. at Southeast 184th Street and 116th Avenue Southeast near Benson Hill Elementary in Renton.

The victims, who live nearby, were in a crosswalk when they were struck by a vehicle turning the corner at the intersection, according to police.

Police said that so far, it appears that the vehicle stopped at the intersection, then proceeded past the intersection to round the corner and struck the pedestrians.

The girl has critical injuries and the woman has serious injuries, Renton firefighters said.

Witnesses said it looked like the truck ran over the girl and it appeared she had two broken legs.

Both victims were taken to Harborview Medical Center.

The two were walking with another family member, a boy who also attends Benson Hill Elementary. He got out of the way in time and was not hurt.

KIRO 7 talked with family member Jose Mariscal, who said he ran outside and saw the victims lying on the ground.  Mariscal says he's devastated and is praying they will be OK.

"My little brother came to the house and told me something happened to (the mother) and I went outside and they were lying on the floor and she was crying, she was hugging the little girl, her little daughter. She didn't know what to do," said Mariscal.

Renton police closed 116th Avenue Southeast from Petrovitsky to 192nd for about 40 minutes.

Renton police said the woman who was driving the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
