ARLINGTON, Wash. — Two people are dead after they were struck by a suspected DUI driver on State Route 9 in Arlington early Thursday.

Arlington police said officers and North County Fire and EMS were called to the crash at the intersection of 204th Street Northeast and SR 9 at 2:38 a.m.

Surveillance video from a 7-Eleven showed the moment the car came through the intersection and hit the victims. Two adult pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene.

Arlington police spokesman Sgt. Peter Barrett said officers were in the area on another call when it happened.

“An officer heard a noise, discovered that there had been a collision nearby, discovered the vehicle along with pedestrians who were unconscious and unresponsive,” said Barrett.

Police said the victims may have been in the crosswalk when they were hit.

“It appears they were coming or going from one of the convenience stores in the area. It is a controlled intersection with marked crosswalks,” said Barrett.

The driver, a 28-year-old Stanwood man, remained at the scene after the crash. He was arrested and booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of driving under the influence.

Arlington police said a vehicular homicide conviction can carry a $50,000 fine and a sentence of up to life in prison.

Both directions of SR 9 were closed from East Highland Drive to Eaglefield Drive for several hours and reopened just before 1 p.m.

Anyone with information or who witnessed the collision but was not contacted at the scene is asked to call the Arlington Police Department at 360-403-3400 and reference case #2022-1175.
