SEATTLE — A man is in critical condition after he was pulled from the waters of the Duwamish Waterway near Terminal 18 on Harbor Island Monday.
A Seattle Fire Department boat and medics were called to the 2400 block of 11th Avenue Southwest at 8:42 a.m. for a report of two people in distress in the water.
When rescuers arrived, two men were already on shore. They had been picked up by a private boat and then a crane on Pier 18 lifted them to shore.
KIRO 7 learned the first man who went into the water was a crew member who had fallen off the Rotterdam container ship.
A second man, SSA Marine operations manager for Terminal 18, Jason Maxwell, had received a call about someone in the water, ran outside, saw the man in distress, and jumped into the water to help him.
The man who is a crew member on the container ship was bobbing up and down. As Maxwell swam toward him, the man went under. Maxwell dove down, retrieved the man and then flagged down a private boat.
The container ship crew member, who is about 30 years old, was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.
Maxwell suffered hypothermia, but is expected to be ok.
