CLALLAM COUNTY, Wash. — Deputies with the Clallam County Sheriff's Office solved a series of thefts and vehicles prowls this week.

Incident 1:

On Wednesday around 11 a.m., deputies said officers with the Port Angeles Police Department responded to reports of a man shoplifting from an Athletes Choice located at 215 West 1st Street.

The man, later identified as Nicholas Read, concealed items and left out of the back of the store, officials said.

Responding officers issued Read a three-year trespass from the store and he was released without charge. The officers said Read was wearing camouflage grayy pants and a black hooded top when he was released.

Officials said they discovered that Read was “associated with” a 2003 Volkswagen.

Incident 2:

Also on Wednesday, around 12:24 p.m., deputies said they responded to reports of a vehicle prowl at a Dollar Tree located at 3456 E. Highway 101 in Port Angeles.

Officials said the man who called 911 said he had witnessed a man prowl a GMC Yukon, steal items and flee eastbound on Highway 101 in a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta.

"Deputy Federline made contact with the reporting party and learned that the suspect was a white male, wearing grey camouflage pants, red shoes, and had a dark hoodie on it with writing on the front," officials with the Sheriff's Office wrote in a news release.

Officials said the deputy contacted the victim of the prowl, who explained she was made aware of the incident while she was shopping inside the Dollar Tree.

The woman's sunglasses and phone were stolen from her vehicle, deputies said.

The items were valued at $700.

Incident 3:

Around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, another crime was reported to the Port Angeles Police Department, officials said.

This time, deputies said someone stole a chainsaw and accessories from a vehicle while the victim was shopping at a Safeway in Port Angeles located at 110 East Third Street.

Incident 4:

Around 3:50 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said a deputy responded to “a report of a male who was acting suspiciously” at a Walmart in Port Angeles located at 3411 East Kolonels Way.

“The male, later identified as Anthony Cottrell, had placed a large amount of items within a shopping cart and on his person,” deputies said.

A Walmart loss prevention associate told deputies Cottrell left the store with the cart full of unpaid merchandise and attempted to flee through the parking lot.

The items stolen were valued at $838.10, officials said.

After the loss prevention associate confronted Cottrell, deputies said he pushed the cart away and entered a silver 2003 Volkswagen Jetta and left, traveling westbound on Highway 101.

Two responding deputies conducted a traffic stop on the Volkswagen on Highway 101.

Deputies said Cottrell was driving the Volkswagen when it was pulled over and said the clothes he was wearing matched the description given by the Walmart employee.

“Anthony confessed to attempting to steal the items and fleeing from Walmart. He further stated that his associate, Nicholas Read, was currently in Walmart stealing items. Anthony also stated Nicholas had prowled a vehicle at Dollar Tree earlier in the day and he believed he still had the stolen phone on his person,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

Deputies sent an officer to the Walmart parking lot, where he detained Read. Read had been waiting for the Volkswagen and did not know it had already left, officials said.

When Read was taken into custody, deputies said they found $109.32 worth of stolen merchandise from Walmart, including electronic accessories and two backpacks.

Deputies said surveillance footage at Walmart showed Read stealing the merchandise.

Deputies obtained a search warrant for the Volkswagen and said they seized a suspected crystal methamphetamine pipe, other drug paraphernalia, a chainsaw and other accessories stolen from the vehicle prowled at the Safeway.

Read was booked into the Clallam County Jail on suspicion of second-degree vehicle prowl and third-degree theft charges. Cottrell was booked into the Clallam County Jail on suspicion of second-degree theft.

Deputies said further may charges may be pending with the Port Angeles Police Department.
