Two young men shot in South Park drive-by shooting

SEATTLE — Two young men were taken to the hospital following a drive-by shooting in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood early Tuesday morning.

According to the Seattle Police Department, officers responded to the corner of 12th Avenue South and South Donovan Street just after 6 a.m.

Matt String was walking his dogs near the intersection and said he heard around fifteen loud gunshots. He said he lives just a block away, and it’s not the alarm that he wanted to wake up to Tuesday morning.

Arriving officers found a 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy with gunshot wounds to their legs, along with a 19-year-old woman who was unharmed. Both victims were taken to Harborview Medical Center in stable condition. String admitted the gunfire was jarring, and spoke with a neighbor who saw what happened.

Joe Lovenduski lives just yards away from the shooting scene. He shared a video from his Ring doorbell camera that caught an image of a silver vehicle that appeared to leave the area in a hurry. He says the car pulled up and someone jumped out and opened fire, “I was having coffee and I looked down, immediately the guy got in and they went to Cloverdale.”

Officers determined the two victims were walking just south of Donovan Street with the woman when the shooting came from a passing vehicle.

Lovenduski says he thinks it was around eight minutes in between when he heard the shots and saw people – so he took a video of them as well.

He says he saw people searching for something after the shooting and people limping away from the area, capturing it all with his phone.

“It was 33 rounds – they shot 33 rounds. It had to have been [automatic], you can’t pull a semi-auto thirty-three times and drive away that quick,” said Lovenduski.

Joe Loew also lives on South Donovan Street, close to where the shooting occurred, and saw the spent shell casings on his way out to work this morning.

“It looks pretty serious, my roommate says he woke up to gunfire but unfortunately that’s not that uncommon. Automatic gunfire is a little uncommon,” said Loew.

The suspect or suspects fled the scene and were not found. While no arrests have been made at this time, SPD did recover ballistic evidence, including over twenty 9mm shell casings.

This information is preliminary and subject to change, and detectives will continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
