Uptick in arsons in Seattle neighborhoods have investigators on alert

SEATTLE — A recent uptick in arsons in the Pioneer Square and Chinatown-International District neighborhoods has investigators on alert.

Five of the fires were set along South King Street. All of the arsons happened between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2, according to fire investigators.

Most of the fires were set in dumpsters and recycling bins near businesses, but a fire that was set inside a locked business that was closed for remodeling caused thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.

One of the fires was recorded by a surveillance camera. A man is seen walking up to a trash bin. He then puts something inside and a fire erupts.

Fire investigators are asking for people in those neighborhoods to stay alert.

“For businesses and homes alike, make sure exit paths are clear. It is also fire prevention month. One thing you can do is prepare an escape route in case of a fire so you can get out quickly,” said Seattle Fire Department spokesperson David Cuerpo.

Seattle Fire Department investigators are working with the Seattle Police Department Arson and Bomb Squad to share information about the ongoing investigation.

The fires were set at the following locations:

  • 5th Ave. S. and S. King St. — Dumpster fire
  • 1000 block of S. Jackson St. — Fire in a business that was closed and undergoing remodeling
  • 1st Ave. S. and S. King St. — Rubbish fire
  • 1st Ave. S. and S. King St. — Rubbish fire
  • Alaskan Way S. and S. King St. — Electric scooter set on fire
  • Alaskan Way S. and S. King St. — Rubbish fire
  • 10th Ave. S. and S. Jackson St. — Dumpster fire

Officials say anyone who sees someone setting an illegal fire should immediately call 911.
