SEATTLE — Seattle police are investigating a deadly two-car crash in the heart of Downtown Seattle Friday morning.

Seattle Fire Department medics and firefighters were called to Fourth Avenue and Pine Street near Westlake Center at 12:40 a.m. Firefighters had to free two men from a mangled SUV.

Medics tried to save their lives, but Seattle Fire pronounced the 23-year-old driver and 24-year-old passenger dead at the scene.

Police said a white sedan was heading north on Fourth Avenue through a green light and the SUV was heading west on Pine Street, at a high rate of speed and ran a red light.

Both vehicles crashed into each other and ended up on the northwest sidewalk.

The SUV then went out of control and slammed into a pole, killing both men, police said.

The occupants of the white car stayed at the scene, cooperated with police, and then were free to go.

The SUV is so mangled that it is hardly recognizable.

The intersection was shut down for hours in all directions while the SPD traffic collision team investigated.

The vehicles have since been towed away and the intersection reopened around 6:30 a.m.
