OLYMPIA, Wash. — On Wednesday, Jan. 15, the Washington State Department of Transportation announced a new state program that will make purchasing e-bikes more affordable.
Starting in April, WSDOT and vendor APTIM, LLC. will launch an e-bike rebate program that will help offset the cost of purchasing an e-bike and any associated safety equipment.
“I am thrilled to share that following a competitive bid process in 2024, WSDOT identified APTIM, LLC., to develop the technology and processes the agency needs to safely and securely manage the program,” said Adele Peers, who oversees WSDOT’s e-bike program.
WSDOT stated the benefits of e-bikes include:
- Making bike riding more accessible and comfortable
- Reducing household spending on vehicles and vehicle maintenance
- Helping people replace driving trips with bike rides
- Improving the health of people and the planet
The rebate will be either $1,200 or $300, depending on household income compared to the county-area median income.
WSDOT expects that a total of 8,500 vouchers will be handed out.
APTIM will use its experience in the rebates space to train and educate around 100 local bike shops on how to participate in the program.
The $5 million to fund this program was approved in the 2024 supplemental transportation budget.
