The Washington State Patrol didn't buy ads on the Breitbart website. The ads just started just showing up there. Now the State Patrol is trying to get them blocked.
The ads are used as a recruiting tool online. They’re designed to target young men and women who may be interested in joining the State Patrol, based on algorithms used by software from an outside contracting advertising agency.
Now that agency is working to keep the advertising off Breitbart.com.
“They’re not 100 percent certain that it will block all content because it follows the user, not the content,” said Washington State Patrol spokesman Kyle Moore.
Moore said the State Patrol wasn't even aware the ads were appearing until Monday when users on the social media site Reddit started posting about it.
Breitbart is a right-leaning website, filled with articles focusing on political coverage along with opinion pieces.
It’s once again being run by former White House senior advisor Steve Bannon after his ouster from the Trump administration last week. Bannon once called Breitbart a platform for the "alt-right," which is a white nationalist movement.
Moore said the State Patrol decided that was no place for their recruiting ads.
“We like a diverse workforce. We serve very diverse communities and we don’t believe all the opinions on Breitbart reflect that,” Moore said.
