Washout blocks access to popular Olympic National Park campground, trails

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Wash. — Olympic National Park’s Hoh Rain Forest area is closed after a December storm eroded the access road.

The National Parks Service says Upper Hoh Road isn’t safe for travel and won’t reopen it until that can be fixed.

Heavy rains raised the Hoh River, eroding several feet of its banks, which are next to Upper Hoh Road—the only way to access the Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center, campground, picnic area, and trailheads.

Jefferson County maintains the road, which connects Highway 101 to the Olympic National Park boundary.

The county says it is working with state and federal partners to find a solution.
