The weather is about to turn hotter, and wildfire smoke will become an increasing concern. While some haze is already moving overhead today, the greatest potential for reduced air quality comes Tuesday through Thursday as more smoke moves into Western Washington.
High pressure will keep skies mostly sunny today, with highs climbing into the upper-70s and lower-80s. Smoke from Canadian wildfires will create some elevated haze, but most of it should stay aloft, allowing air quality to remain good for most communities.
By Tuesday, winds will begin transporting more smoke into the region from Eastern Washington and British Columbia. Skies will likely become noticeably hazier, and air quality could begin to decline. How much it worsens will depend on how much of that smoke mixes down to the surface.
Wednesday and Thursday appear to be the most concerning days. High temperatures around 90 degrees will coincide with the highest likelihood of smoky skies and periods of reduced air quality. While confidence is high that smoke will be present, the extent of the air quality impacts will continue to be refined over the next couple of days. Some model data put air quality in the unhealthy for sensitive group range. We’ll watch it closely to see specific readings from area to area.
Relief is expected late Thursday as onshore winds return. That marine push should help flush much of the smoke from the region while bringing cooler temperatures. Friday looks more comfortable, with highs in the mid-80s and improving air quality.
The weekend continues the cooling trend with seasonable temperatures in the mid-70s to low-80s and plenty of sunshine.
Another concern this week will be elevated fire danger as the warm, dry pattern continues, especially in areas experiencing offshore winds.
