COUPEVILLE, Wash. — Whidbey Animals’ Improvement Foundation (WAIF) needs towels and blankets for its cats and dogs after the shelter’s gas dryer malfunctioned and caught on fire at its Coupeville location.
It happened Sunday morning.
WAIF says all the animals and staff are safe. Their sprinkler system helped fend off flames until Central Whidbey Fire arrived to extinguish it.
The shelter did sustain some water and fire damage.
Anyone who would like to donate blankets and towels can drop them off at the Coupeville location at 60 Park Road during business hours.

“We are very grateful to Central Whidbey Fire for their calm, quick, and professional response in extinguishing the fire and ensuring our animals and staff were safe,” the shelter wrote online.
WAIT is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1990 to help Whidbey Island’s homeless companion animals.
