‘She tried to punch me’: Tenant accused of stabbing landlord to death over rent in White Center

KING COUNTY, Wash. — A 19-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the death of her 73-year-old landlord that occurred inside an apartment in White Center.

Around 7:15 p.m. on Friday, King County deputies answered calls about a homicide at an apartment building in the 9800 block of 15th Avenue Southwest in the White Center area of Unincorporated King County.

According to the first appearance documents, the suspect was behind on rent and her landlord was in a different room when she asked the suspect about paying rent. The suspect told investigators that her landlord struck her in the face and that’s when the suspect struck her back and stabbed her twice. After nearly 50 minutes, the suspect called her sister to tell her what she had done. The suspect’s brother-in-law called 911 and said “she had killed someone” after the suspect showed her sister the victim’s body through a video phone call.

911 operators then called the suspect with information provided by her sister but she denied all of it and claimed to be in a different town with friends.

After being questioned further by the 911 operator, the suspect said, “Yeah…she tried to punch me, and I stabbed her.”

When deputies arrived, they found a deceased woman in one of the rooms of the residence.

After having her Miranda Rights read to her, the suspect confessed to killing her landlord.

The 19-year-old was taken to a Burien Police station to be questioned by a detective and was eventually booked into King County Jail for suspicion of second-degree murder.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit are handling the investigation.

The King County Medical Examiner will release the victim’s name, cause and manner of death.
