Woman fatally shot during robbery in Seattle

Seattle Police are asking for your help to catch the man who killed a woman in South Seattle Thursday night.

They also said they’ve seen dozens of Asian women targeted in robberies in the last four months.

In the Thursday incident, police said the suspect was trying to take the woman’s purse and she was shot as she resisted. It was shortly after 8 p.m. last night when neighbors heard the gunshots.

My-Linh Nguyen, 47, was killed at the corner of 39th Avenue South and Warsaw. She was just three doors away from home when she was shot. She leaves behind a 15-year-old son who heard the commotion.

He husband approached reporters Friday, but grief overwhelmed him as he tried to speak.

Police have not released a suspect description.

Crime Scene Investigators are going over forensic evidence gathered Thursday. They are also pouring over surveillance video from the nearby gas station. Employees there first thought the gunshots were celebrating a touchdown during last night's Seahawks game.

“This is a coward,” Assistant Seattle Police Chief Robert Merner said of the shooter. Merner oversees homicide investigations.

A Seattle Police task force has investigated 62 incidents in the last 4 and a half months, many against Asian women. In those cases, 47 suspects have been arrested.

“We have had some of these incidents involving firearms but none that resulted in shots being fired and that was the difference last night,” Merner said.

Neighbor Ali Osman was resting at home when the shooting happened.

“I heard 3 shots of gun. Then when I got up I saw a guy run this way. I didn't see any face.”

Minutes later, Asuncion Zarsadias walked by on her way home.

“She's lying down there they give CPR,” Zarsadias said. “The 911 (paramedics) gave CPR to the girl over there.”

Neighbor Ali Osman is still stunned

“Because you can't believe that somebody would shoot somebody because of what the person has in their purse – that's just ridiculous to take somebody's life like that.”

Police don’t have a good description of the killer, so they are asking anyone with information to call their tip line: (206) 233-5000.
