Woman sustains life-threatening injuries in domestic violence shooting in Puyallup

PUYALLUP, Wash. — A woman suffered life-threatening injuries in a domestic violence shooting Sunday morning in Puyallup, officers said.

Puyallup Police Department officers responded around 10:35 a.m. to a reported shooting in the 1600 block of 9th Street Southeast.

When they arrived, they found a 54-year-old woman with a gunshot wound in the front yard of the house. She was treated by Central Pierce Fire and Rescue and transported to the hospital, where she is in surgery with life-threatening injuries.

Officers learned from a witness that the shooting suspect was still armed and inside the residence. They also talked to the 55-year-old son of the suspect and learned that the suspect is reported to have dementia.

A release from the department said the 85-year-old suspect argued with his son, saying that he thought an upcoming appointment was today. After the argument, the son went outside to do yard work.

The son then saw his girlfriend, the shooting victim, crawling out of the residence with a gunshot wound to her abdomen.

Washington State Patrol’s SWAT team, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and the Sumner Police Department also responded to the incident.

The suspect eventually peacefully surrendered around 12:31 p.m., police said.
