Woman walking home in Belltown hit with baseball bat in random attack

Police lights, file photo

SEATTLE — A man was arrested Tuesday after attacking a woman walking home in Seattle with a baseball bat Monday night.

Police were called to the 200 block of Cedar Street in the Belltown neighborhood at 6:30 p.m. Monday after a woman said she was suddenly hit in the back of the head.

She had no idea who attacked her, but witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing from the scene with a baseball bat.

Investigators said evidence recovered by officers showed that someone walked up behind the woman and took a full swing at the back of her head, knocking her to the ground.

The woman was bleeding from one of her ears and was taken to a hospital by Seattle Fire Department medics.

After reviewing video of the incident on Tuesday, an officer recognized the suspect from a previous encounter.

Officers arrested the 31-year-old man at his Belltown apartment without incident later that day.

He was booked into the King County Jail for assault.
