Woodland Park Zoo welcomes pudu fawn

Image 1 of 8

The Woodland Park Zoo welcomed a tiny male pudu, born on May 5, according to the zoo.

Pudus are the smallest deer species in the world and are native to the lower Andes of Chile and southwest Argentina.

Listed as near-threatened due to hunting and loss of habitat, the zoo pudus are part of the Pudu Species Survival Plan, a breeding program across zoos to help ensure the stability of the species.

The deer will only reach approximately 14 to 18 inches in height at the shoulders and weigh between 14 and 30 pounds.

This the third offspring for the fawn’s parents, Ted and Maggie.

Their first offspring, Chile, was born in 2020 and now lives at the Bronx Zoo in New York, while their second offspring, Ande, is still at the Woodland Park Zoo.

The pudus live in the zoo’s Temperate Forest habitat, where the best time to see the fawn is around 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
