WSDA hosts field training to trap, tag Asian giant hornets

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — The Washington State Department of Agriculture is hosting a field training day to help trap Asian giant hornets in the state.

The WSDA’s Pest Program’s staff will go through several training sessions and exercises in hornet detection in the state.

Some of the exercises include live trap construction, how to capture and tag, and testing eradication gear.

The all-day session is happening near Blaine, where a live Asian giant hornet was recently spotted. It’s also where a nest was found last year.

Anyone who spots a suspected hornet is asked to report the sighting on WSDA’s website at agr.wa.gov/hornets.

The online reporting form allows you to upload photos and indicate on a map where the sighting occurred. Alternatively, sightings can be emailed to hornets@agr.wa.gov or can be reported at 1-800-443-6684.
