WSDOT pretreat roads, passes as the threat of black ice continues

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. — Saturday, the Washington State Department of Transportation warned drivers to be cautious, as they expected black ice to form on roadways.

“The one thing for travelers to be conscious of is the potential for anything that was wet to refreeze and become black ice. Watch out for overpasses that tend to freeze quicker, curves that could be slick tomorrow morning,” David Rasbach with WSDOT told KIRO 7.

Rasbach said WSDOT crews were using anti-icer in the lowlands and would use de-icer as well. He explained, “Anti-icer is applied before the storm to prevent ice from forming on a bare road, reduce the amount of snow build up and accelerate snow and ice break up after a storm. De-icer is applied to remove a thin layer of ice already on the road effective for melting and preventing black ice.”

He said plows would be used on the mountain passes as needed. At Snoqualmie Pass, KIRO 7 saw plows at work as snow fell near the summit.

Visitors said the trip up was slick, but the mountain views made it worth the trek. Fernando Fragoso told KIRO it was his first time visiting Snoqualmie since he is originally from San Diego.

“It’s awesome. It’s a great place and everyone should come check it out,” Fernando Fragoso said.

WSDOT reminded drivers to give their crews plenty of room. They said it is also important to check pass conditions, carry chains, and have an emergency kit in your car.
