Major weekend road closures on SR 99, I-90

SEATTLE — Drivers may have a tough time getting around this weekend if they plan on using State Route 99 and westbound Interstate 90.

The Washington State Department of Transportation said the closures will impact all drivers on SR 99 and those who use westbound I-90 to get across Lake Washington.

The closures are expected to have a ripple effect on traffic on both sides of Lake Washington.

In Seattle, the Alaskan Way Viaduct will be closed during daylight hours Saturday and Sunday for a semiannual inspection.

Crews will close two northbound lanes and one southbound lane of SR 99 between Ward Street and Highland Drive from 7 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.     WSDOT and SDOT contractor crews will then close SR 99 between the Battery Street Tunnel and Valley Street from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

On I-90, westbound traffic between Bellevue Way and Rainier Avenue South will be detoured to the I-90 express lanes from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. Drivers heading to Mercer Island must exit westbound I-90 at East Mercer Way. There are no westbound exits to Mercer Island from the express lanes.

The westbound I-90 work is for HOV lane installation.

To add to the traffic congestion, there are several big events in town -- the PBR Rodeo, Emerald City Comicon and the Taste of Washington.
