EVERETT, Wash. — Mariner High School in south Everett is banning students from wearing sports jerseys or apparel from non-Seattle area teams.
The new policy was detailed in a "welcome back" letter from the principal. He said those shirts have become symbols for certain gang affiliations.
One student attending freshman orientation thought the changes were sensible.
School administrators said they made the decision after consulting with an Everett law enforcement task force that said it had been seeing an increase in gang activity around the campus.
Classes begin September 2.
