Accused killer David Kalac was back in court Tuesday facing an new charge of attempted murder. Prosecutors say he tried to kill a fellow inmate in the Kitsap County Jail.
Kalac was already awaiting trial for murdering his girlfriend, Amber Coplin, and posting naked pictures of her body on 4chan, an anonymous website.
In court on Tuesday Kalac’s attorney, Kevin Anderson, argued that the attack on a fellow inmate wasn’t as violent as it sounds. He asked the judge for bail to be set at $10,000.
Investigators say Kalac got his hands on a piece of cardboard and was able to keep his cell door unlocked. Surveillance video shows him to go the cell of Wayne Allen Carlson, pulling him off the top bunk attacking him and slamming his head against the sink before putting him in a choke hold.
Carlson was able to push the emergency button to get help and was later treated at a hospital for bruises and scrapes, according to charging documents.
The judge set bail on the attempted murder charge at $1 million. Kalac’s previous bail for Coplin’s murder change is $2 million. He pleaded not guilty to both.
Kalac, 33, was arrested in Wilsonville, Oregon in November after fleeing Washington. Police said Kalac turned himself in, waived his extradition hearing in Oregon and was returned to Washington.
There was a multistate manhunt for Kalac, who police say killed his girlfriend in her Port Orchard apartment, and posted pictures of her on the Internet.
Coplin’s teenaged son found her body in the apartment when he returned from school.
Kalac’s cellphone and laptop were gone from the apartment. The victim’s purse was dumped out. Police said she was beaten to death.
The message on 4chan was surrounded by photos of a dead woman's body. The victim appears nude, with marks on her throat.
"Check the news for Port Orchard Washington in a few hours,” the comment next to the photos reads. “Her son will be home from school soon. He'll find her, then call the cops. I just wanted to share the pics before they find me. I bought a BB gun that looks realistic enough. When they come, I'll pull it and it will be suicide by cop. I understand the doubts. Just check the f------ news. I have to lose my phone now."
In court documents, police said the images “matched the deceased.” There was noted trauma, and the residence interior matched the crime scene, according to police.
“The poster also made comments that she put up a fight,” according to Kalac’s court documents.
“She killed me first” was written on the bedroom wall, “bad news” was written on the bedroom blinds and the word “dead" was written on the victim’s driver’s license, according to investigation documents.
Court documents show Kalac threatened to kill a different girlfriend last March. She filed a restraining order.
Kalac will be back in court on January 20th for the murder and attempted murder charges.
