On Monday, Representative Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA-1) introduced H.R. 1161, a bill that seeks to authorize President Trump to negotiate the acquisition of Greenland and rename it “Red, White, and Blueland.”
The proposed legislation has been referred to the House Committees on Foreign Affairs and Natural Resources for further consideration.
The bill’s text is not yet available, as it is pending publication by the Government Publishing Office.
This initiative recalls a similar proposal from 2019, when the U.S. government expressed interest in purchasing Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.
At that time, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen dismissed the idea, stating, “Greenland is not for sale.”
The proposal’s implications for U.S.-Denmark relations and the residents of Greenland remain uncertain.
As of now, there is no official response from the Danish government or Greenlandic authorities regarding this new proposal.
The bill must pass both the House of Representatives and the Senate before it can be presented to the President for approval.
