New speed cameras could mean millions for Seattle

West Seattle’s first school zone speed camera brought in more than $1 million.

SEATTLE — There is a new, costly speed trap in West Seattle.

Two new speed cameras are now actively sending out tickets to speeders along Roxbury Street.

The cameras are designed to slow down cars as they zip by Roxhill Elementary and the Holy Family School during school hours.

However, Seattle police said, based on history, the cameras could be big money-makers for the city.

West Seattle’s first speed camera was installed along Fauntleroy Way by Gatewood Elementary.  Last school year it issued 5,500 tickets, each for $189, for a total that tops $1 million.

Dave Nichols' teenage daughter got ticketed twice by the speed camera, but he thinks the cameras protect kids and do send the right message to drivers.

“All in all, I think it’s necessary, especially with really young children darting into traffic,” Nichols said.

However, many on the KIRO 7 Facebook page wrote that the cameras go too far.  Feel free to weigh in on the conversation here: http://kiro.tv/1rHXpZ9
