40-year-old man dies after being handcuffed by Snohomish County deputies

EVERETT, Wash. — The Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team is investigating after a man died after he was taken into police custody in Everett.

Snohomish County deputies were called to the 13300 block of Highway 99 on Friday at 8:30 p.m. for a report that a 40-year-old man had assaulted his father at their home.

Two deputies arrived to find the man in the home’s driveway.

He was put into handcuffs and deputies requested aid a minute later. CPR was performed, but the man was pronounced dead at about 9:25 p.m.

Both deputies were hired by the sheriff’s office a little over a year ago and will be placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure.

The Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team is a team of detectives from various Snohomish County law enforcement agencies who respond to and investigate police use of force incidents and in-custody deaths.

When the SMART investigation is complete, results will be forwarded to the Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney, who will make the determination if the use of force was justified.
