WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Washington State Patrol Trooper Heather Axtman said about 10:16 p.m. Sunday both directions of I-5 at Old Fairhaven Parkway were back open after a multi-vehicle crash closed all lanes after 7:30 p.m.

At about 9 p.m. all southbound lanes were reopened and traffic was just getting by on the shoulder of the northbound lanes.

Officials with the Washington State Department of Transportation closed the lanes initially when the crash happened.

Trooper Axtman said a driver in a Volkswagen lost control and hit a pickup truck, which lost control and went over a guardrail and crashed in a tree, trapping the driver and passenger inside.

Trees are in the median of the interstate in the area of the crash.

Trooper Axtman told KIRO 7 by phone there were five patients in all.

Officials have not said when the northbound lanes will reopen.

Drivers headed to the area were warned to use alternate routes.

KIRO 7 has a crew headed to the scene to gather more details on the collision.
