LYNNWOOD, Wash. — Homeless students in Lynnwood may be a step closer to getting help if the city council approves a bond to buy a motel and turn it into housing.
The idea is being called a potential life-saver.
The school district says they have hundreds of students and their families who could potentially use the two-story Rodeo Inn on Highway 99 as a home.
The city council has approved a purchase agreement to spend about $5 million to buy it and transform it into housing for some of the Edmonds School District's 500 families categorized as homeless.
Families and the district say it is help they could gladly use.
"They’re cold, they’re scared, they’re staying in cars, some are living in tents,” said mother Kori Blevens.
"We’re in the due diligence stage, where we’re going inside the building, inspecting it to make sure that it’s an appropriate use for housing,” said Julie Moore with the City of Lynnwood.
The motel currently has 52 rooms, and if the bond is approved and the idea moves forward, decisions will be made about which families would live there.
The motel has been described as the spot where a lot of 911 calls have been made. The city says if it’s transformed into housing, it could be a good use for the hotel.
