EVERETT, Wash. — A man has been arrested in an arson at an Everett apartment building that injured one woman and may have led to the death of a second woman.

Firefighters battled the three-alarm fire at 2229 Colby Avenue on Dec. 21.
One woman was hurt when she jumped from a second-floor balcony to escape.
A 76-year-old woman, who was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, later died. Before her death, her family said she was unresponsive and on a breathing machine. The cause and manner of her death are still under investigation.
After 3-alarm fire in Everett, questions about needing more firefighters
Everett police detectives later determined that a man started a fire in the only stairwell that connected the first and second floors.
A tip led detectives to Bellingham, where a 40-year-old man was questioned and confessed to starting the fire, according to Everett detectives.
The man was booked into the Snohomish County Jail on arson and assault charges.
