BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man after a host of vehicles were hit by prowlers in Bellingham.
Deputies said a bait device was deployed in the 3100 block of Locust Avenue. It's an area where prowlers have targeted cars in recent weeks.
On Friday, law enforcement officers put a cellphone inside a backpack and placed it in a parked car. At about 11:54 a.m., detectives said they received an alert that the cellphone had been stolen.
Pictures were being taken of the man, later identified as David Barber, and were being sent to detectives as they tracked the cellphone, detectives said. Barber was spotted driving on Northwest Avenue and Jefferson Street and was stopped.
Detectives said Barber admitted to stealing the backpack from the car. He was driving on a suspended driver’s license.
Barber was booked into the Whatcom County Jail for second-degree theft, second-degree vehicle prowl and third-degree driving while license suspended.
