EVERETT, Wash. — With some 60,000 people expected to move to Everett over the next 20 years, the city wants a growth plan that encourages more walking, biking and using public transportation.
Karen Owens and her son moved to the city just over a year ago and they are getting used to taking the bus.
“I am taking him to meet up with his coach because they are carpooling to Seattle,” said Owens.
Part of the plan by the city is to require new developments in the city to only build the minimum number of parking spaces needed.
Buildings as tall as 25 stories will be allowed downtown and the plan would also re-zone parking to make one-car families more common. That will eliminate parking spaces around the downtown core.
“It’s all part of the city trying to encourage more growth and development in a vibrant atmosphere,” said David Stalheim, the long range planning manager for the City of Everett.
With the addition of light rail, connecting Everett to Downtown seattle, the city expects growth to happen fast.
“Part of this is planning for light rail to come to Everett,” said Stalheim. “By 2036, the light rail is planning to be here.”
A public hearing is happening Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. as the Everett City Council considers parking changes around the city. The city council is set to make a final decision by the end of the month.
