SEATTLE — Officials with the mayor’s office said the owners of the University District nightclub Fusion Ultra Lounge decided Thursday to shut down the nightclub.
This comes after two shootings occurred outside the nightclub in the last two months.
"I'm really, really happy,” said Cheryl Duke, who works next door.
She was headed home when the most recent shooting happened outside Club Fusion in late February. That incident sent three people to the hospital.
"I heard these successive gunshots, and I was like, OK, we're going inside now,” said Duke.
City officials said the owners decided to voluntarily and permanently close Club Fusion.
Last week, the city asked the state Liquor Control Board to grant an emergency suspension of the club’s liquor license.
Duke thinks Club Fusion’s departure will make the area safer.
"Just a lot of really drunk kids, and people who would bring guns in there and get drunk and get into fights with each other,” said Duke.
Seattle police say Club Fusion has been a trouble spot for them.
"This has been a sore spot for the north precinct for years. We've got 45 incidents that are on view and calls for service at Club Fusion just over the past year alone,” said Sgt. Sean Whitcomb with the Seattle Police Department.
