Pierce County Sergeant Rich Scaniffe and Deputy Dominique “Dom” Calata and Deputy Deputy Dominique “Dom” Calata Two deputies with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department were wounded in a shooting on Tuesday, March 15. Deputy Dom Calata died on Wednesday after being shot in the head.

Pierce County Deputy Dominique “Dom” Calata Calata served in the U.S. Army for five years and had served in the National Guard for the last seven years.

Pierce County Sergeant Sergeant Rich Scaniffe Sergeant Rich Scaniffe, 45, is a 21-year veteran of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department. He was shot in the leg and survived. He is assigned to the Mountain Detachment, which serves southeast Pierce County, including the unincorporated areas of Roy, McKenna, Eatonville, Alder, Elbe, Ashford, and parts of Graham, Orting and Spanaway.

Pierce County Sergeant Sergeant Rich Scaniffe Scaniffe is married and has a young daughter. Earlier this year, he read the “Cat in the Hat” as part of the department’s “Storytime with a Sheriff’” program. He said the book was one of his daughter’s favorites because of the voices he would do for the characters.
