1986 Coretta Scott King letter sparks Senate dustup over Trump pick for Attorney General

A fairly routine Senate debate about President Trump’s choice for Attorney General suddenly went off the rails on Tuesday night, as Republicans used an arcane rule to stop Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) from speaking on the Senate floor, and then voted to rebuke her for reading from a 30 year old letter that was critical of Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL).

The letter, written in 1986 by Coretta Scott King, wife of slain civil rights leader Dr. Marin Luther King, opposed the nomination of Sessions for a federal judgeship. Sessions at the time was a federal prosecutor.
