Sen. Patty Murray is seeking a sixth term 30 years after her first run for U.S. Senate as a self-described “mom in tennis shoes.”

Murray has long advocated abortion rights and says the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade gives her campaign new urgency.

Though she is facing 17 challengers in the primary, her main opponent is Republican Tiffany Smiley, whose campaign ads describe her as a “Washington farm girl, political outsider, advocate and nurse, and someone who has dedicated her life to standing up for veterans.”

Smiley is a nurse and motivational speaker. This is her first run for public office.

Murray’s campaign ads focus on Smiley’s abortion position, which includes audio of Smiley describing herself as “100% pro-life.”

Smiley said with the legality of abortion left up to states, nothing changes in Washington, and that she would not support a federal ban.
