Public meeting to be held on Makah whale hunt

SEATTLE — On Monday, the public can weigh in on a plan to resume gray whale hunting off the Olympic Peninsula.

The Makah Tribe last hunted whales in 1999.

The tribe wants to hunt gray whales again, but they need federal permission.

A new federal draft report offers a range of options, from no whaling at all, to allowing the Makah to kill up to five whales a year.

The public is invited to share input at the 6:30 p.m. meeting.  It’s being held at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Western Regional Center on Sandpoint Way Northeast in Seattle.
