Redmond teen, an "opportunistic criminal"

REDMOND, Wash. — According to court documents obtained by KIRO 7, Thor Andrews is a one-man crime wave.

The 18-year-old Redmond resident confessed to committing several hundred car prowls and mail thefts throughout last summer. Most of his victims are his very own North Redmond neighbors, who leave their doors and mailboxes unlocked.

"Last April, he started coming up on the radar," said Redmond Police Officer Mike Dowd."We hadn't been able to tie him to any crimes yet."

Redmond Police said they got a big break in this case when Andrews allegedly stole the iPhone of a delivery truck driver. That driver used his ''Find My iPhone" app and traced his iPhone right to Andrews' house.

KIRO 7 contacted the driver, Shawn Jones, by telephone. "It showed a picture of my phone sitting right there on top of the house in Redmond," said Jones.

Jones' detective work enabled Redmond Police to get a search warrant. Once inside Andrews' house, they found heroin and evidence of at least a hundred mail thefts.

"He's walking through neighborhoods, getting into unlocked cars, taking whatever he can find, whether that be electronics or whatever he's finding," said Dowd. "And then the mail theft."

A reporter from KIRO 7 stopped by Andrews' house and asked his mother about the allegations against him.

"He hasn't been to trial, so I don't know why that is even coming about," said Renee Andrews.

And she wouldn't say much more.

"Well, we don't have anything to say about that, but thank you," she said.

Then she slammed the door.

Thor Andrews is still on the street. The King County prosecutor asked for $50,000 bail. But a judge let Andrews go on his own recognizance, despite a long list of alleged crimes.

He is to be arraigned Thursday, January 2. More charges may be filed against him.
