Renton GameStop slashing suspect to undergo mental evaluation

Renton GameStop stabbing suspect Darren Gayles

KENT, Wash. — The 44 year-old accused of slashing a Renton GameStop employee’s throat after robbing her will undergo a mental evaluation.

Darren Gayles was brought into the Regional Justice Center courtroom in Kent for an arraignment that was supposed to happen Thursday.

His attorney says that can’t happen yet until tests are run.

“I'm aware that he apparently has significant amount of medications that he's now taking, and had previously been committed to other health facilities in other states,” his attorney told a judge.

Gayles is accused of slashing the throat of 23 year-old Kiersten Shiedeler on Jan. 13 after he demanded the money in the register and she complied.

Renton police said he was later caught on camera at a transit station, which led them to him.

KIRO 7 stopped by the victim’s home, where family said she is recovering physically and psychologically.

They also provided a picture of one of the dozens of bouquets she has received from well-wishers in recent weeks.

Gayles will be back in the Kent courtroom for his arraignment on Feb. 18.
